Specialization is Better for the Ethiopian Diaspora

First of all I am assuming that most of the Ethiopian diaspora sympathize with the opposition political parties back home. I have observed that the opposition leaders in exile are dedicated and engine for most of the activities that are happening in the diaspora. I believe if politicians specialize in activities instead of a few individuals doing most of the tasks, they will improve their effectiveness and productivity and reduce financial expenses and better utilization of their time.

If for example, we use the old administrative structure in this example, Ethiopians in the Virginia state of USA has many people from the original Shewa province, they could apply them to specialize their tasks in gathering information; formulating and developing programs; and activities related to the Shewa region of Ethiopia and say if there are many Ethiopians from the former Sidamo province concentrated in the state of California (let’s say in Los Angeles), we can get them specialized for all or most of the opposition party activities related to Sidamo matters, or Minnesota based Ethiopians handle all Oromia related activities, if we use the present administrative system, the same can be said for Europe and other parts of the world. It can be said that using this method of task divisions will bring about better effectiveness and efficiency for the opposition. If I could state a few of them below:

Specialization helps the diaspora

Come in contact locally with each other regularly which in turn will lead them to :

  1. coordinate their tasks better.
  2. differentiate friend from foe.
  3. hammer out many issues both related to dometic and international affairs.
  4. identifying better who is better at doing tasks and who is not leading to more effectiveness and productivities.
  5. with time on their side, help to formulate and develop programs to be implemented later in Ethiopia.
  6. gel together or improve their working relationship.
  7. reduce travel costs.
  8. liais better with authorities of host countries.

By using people who have more affinity with each region than the way things are done now, specialization will help in the following ways:

Due to their affinity with the regions

  • they have both  explicit and implicit knowledge of the region, that is they know the culture, terrain etc…better than others.
  • they know who is who in the region – helps in differentiating friend from foe etc….
  • they have contacts with the people of the region –> they know what’s going on–> very valuable information of the opposition.

If the opposition ever comes to power, their acquaintance with the region by using this method of organization would help them :

  1. relatively easily set up administration.
  2. they will know in advance who is who.
  3. they would have developed a program in advance helping them implement their programs, helping them in turn win over the local population quickly.

In this way of organization the overall leaders of the opposition could concentrate their efforts in setting up the general framework under which these specialized groups work. This will help them save time, financial resources, improve the availability of voluntary workers, experts etc….This way of organization would be less taxing on the efforts of the leaders family, work and individual lives.

Relatively Quick Way to Get Rid of TPLF Part II

To continue from my last posting, incidentally I would like to add a few things. Talking about insurgency, its disadvantages greatly out-weigh its advantages for any country in my opinion.

If we recall the times of Mengistu H/ Mariam the repression the population went through as a result of the measures the government took to counter the insurgencies, I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. The check-points at most roads, especially outside of Addis Ababa ; the search for weapons in people’s homes ; the incarceration of political opponents ; the interrogations and tortures of suspects and opponents  alike, the assassinations and executions etc…. where we could say the civil liberties of both the individual and the population was drastically cut.Insurgency will mean all these things will make a second appearance in our short life-time span.

Like I said before, I admire and appreciate Prof. Musse’s efforts and sacrifices he has done for our country so far. I am writing this to appeal to the dear Professor to consider other options, such as conventional ground force military offensive where possible like I advocated in my first post. With such an option, it will take 3-5 years at most with minimum social, economic and civil rights disruptions if things go the way we wish them. Otherwise, it will take a decade or two, which I wouldn’t want the population to go through.

Relatively Quick Way to Get Rid of TPLF

16-03-2012

This is my first post and I hope to post my thinkings and observations about Ethiopia and her current affaires. I would also would like to add that I am no expert in the field I will write about but I am writing these as an ordinary concerned Ethiopian citizen.

I appreciate the time, energy and risks Prof. Musee Tegegne dedicated to reach his and our goals to liberate Ethiopia from TPLF. He has seen first hand that it is impossible to get organized and wage any activity from the soil of Eritrea regarding Ethiopia.

As obervations point out, it is impossible to base our activities in any of neighbouring countries of Ethiopia. Instead, I suggest we base our activities a bit further, say in the Indean Ocean or Gulf States and launch armed struggle from there.

If, for example, we based our struggle from the friendly state of Qatar, get organised, get armed and enter Ethiopia via Somalia, as The British did to liberate Ethiopia from Italian occupation in 1941, we will get a better prospective than what Prof. Muse is advocating now.

I don’t know whether it is internationally legal to do this, but if it was possible to wage an armed struggle from neighbouring countries as the time of Mengistu, I don’t see any reasons why it can’t be done now. The only difference being distance.

This distance isn’t much and it’s a fertile ground to recruite prospective combatants. These days, we see each year thousands trying to migrate from Ethiopia via Somalia due to political and economic hardships experienced at homeland. If given the chance, they might choose to join the armed struggle. Others could organize the financial and legal aspects of it.

In this way I believe we could achieve our goals at less human lives, time, material and financial resources. Of course all these depend on the goodwill of host countries and networking abilities of the Professor and others at higher level.

Insurgency will probably take decades to liberate Ethiopia from TPLF regime, causing economic and social instabilities and human casualties which we will not probably be able to reach its goals in our lifetime. It takes decades most of the time.
